HISTORY OF THE TOWNHOUSE

Welcome to Rynek 24, a townhouse with a story stretching back several centuries, located in one of the most atmospheric parts of Rzeszów’s Old Town. Staying here means experiencing a piece of the city’s heritage from the inside.

A House in the Heart of the Old Town

The building stands on the northern side of the Market Square, next to the Bristol Hotel. This is the historic center of Rzeszów — a place where daily life, culture, and centuries-old architecture come together.

The Market Square took shape in the 15th century, originally lined with wooden houses built above brick cellars. Beneath the square runs a network of underground passages, once used for storage and as escape routes. Today, they form a popular tourist route, with an entrance just a short walk from the townhouse.

From Wooden House to Historic Monument

Rynek 24 is a listed historic building, originally constructed in the 16th century as a two‑storey wooden house with brick foundations. A major fire in 1842 destroyed much of the Old Town’s wooden architecture, but the stone cellars survived. After the fire, the townhouse was rebuilt and expanded, giving it the 19th‑century appearance that still defines its façade today.

Modern Additions with Respect for the Past

In 2011, the building was extended with two additional floors, including an attic illuminated by skylight windows. The new structure was set back from the original façade and separated by a decorative cornice to preserve the historic look of the building.

Today, the townhouse has five levels, including a partially lit underground floor. Inside, you’ll find a distinctive layout with a central vaulted corridor and an open gallery running through all floors, topped with a glass skylight that fills the interior with soft natural light.

A Touch of Symbolism

On the attic façade, you can spot a sundial framed by the zodiac signs Gemini and Capricorn. Above it appears the Latin motto Vita brevis, ars longa — “Life is short, art is long” — a reminder of the lasting value of craftsmanship and creativity.

In the entrance hall, a ceramic plaque shaped like an open book presents the history of the building’s owners, offering a glimpse into the townhouse’s long and varied past.
